So, I've been a little MIA with the blog postings. I have a lot to catch up on, but just wanted to share a little bit of excitement.
First, I was sick for a week or two and really struggled with my running. Speed work was definitely on hold. I was even feeling a little sluggish this morning during the warm up.
I started the workout with my group to help keep me at a good pace. Today's workout was 2 sets of 4-8 400s at 5k pace. I knew I'd only do 2 sets of 6 because I did double runs over the weekend. One run included some major FL hills. I figured it was best to take it easy.
The first set, the 400s were right around 1:50-1:58. I was happy with that. I knew I'd be able to maintain that throughout.
The second set, some of us broke off from the rest of the group and we kind of picked it up a bit. We ended up doing about 1:46-1:54 for most of them.
Then we got down to the last 400! I always try to run my last interval the hardest and fastest of them all. I kind of like to see how much gas I really have left in the tank.
We started and I took off. I just kept thinking about my leg turnover. At one point, maybe 100m in I briefly thought, "I'm going way too fast." Something kicked in at that moment and I didn't care. I just cared about finishing it!
I got to the 200 mark and felt pretty good and knew at that point I could push myself to finish just as hard as I started.
Once I got to the 400 mark and hit my watch, I guessed what it would be based on how I felt. I figured 1:37. My fastest 400 prior to that was 1:34. I didn't feel like I had put in the effort for a 1:34.
Well, imagine my surprise when I saw my split time if 1:29! I could not believe it! Never had I ever imagined I would run a quarter mile in 1:29!! if I ever had the chance, I figured it would be during the cooler months, not summer!
Needless to say, I'm pretty happy right now! This is SO motivating and I really feel like I'll be able to hit my 4:10-4:15 marathon goal in November!
